Mangorei School Athletics

During this term we had a person from the athletics association come and teach us the right techniques and skills for athletics activities, then on Wednesday the 27th of November Mangorei School had their athletics sports. Students from 7 years old to 13 years olds took part in lots of events; shot-put, discus, sprints, long jump and high jump. This year we were very lucky to go to the TET Stadium in Inglewood. It was cool being in a proper stadium. We had some parents come along to support their children or child and we had some very good results from some people.
Thank You to Manuel for teaching us and helping to organise this event.

Gardens Galore

Last week 33 students who grew gardens got a chance to show off their gardens when they were visited by some of the staff members. The students have been working very hard to produce these awesome gardens. This is the third anniversary of our school garden project and some students have been participating in this gardening event for the whole three years. All students who participated will get a plant and may win a spot prize of garden vouchers for their future gardens. Thanks must go to the sponsors, nginz and Go Gardening for donating two hundred dollars worth of garden vouchers and one hundred awesome plants. Also a special thanks to Fairfield Gardens for supporting the enviro group all year round and to Mrs Small who co-ordinates the enviro group.

Big Sad Wolf Show

On Monday 12th August, Mangorei School was very lucky to have three actors come and perform a Show called "The Big Sad Wolf".  All the kids were very excited. It was amazing how many characters one person could be. It was great fun and the finalĂ© was awesome.  We could tell everyone loved it by the giggles and laughter coming from the audience. We would all love them to come again with another show.

Canterbury Teamwear Fundraiser

Last month Mangorei PTA hosted a fundraiser to sell Canterbury Team wear. They had to sell 10 of each style to make use of the money. We sold this through a notice to families and a stall at Pets Day. These are the styles that we sold:
  • Children's and Adults Stadium Pants
  • Children's and Adults Tactic Shorts
  • Children's and Adults Ugly Jersey

  • Children's Stadium Pants

We made over $900 profit. This money will go towards computers for the children to use.

Pirates of the Curry Bean Production

Mangorei School had their production in Term 3, Week 9, with performances on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The production was called the Pirates of the Curry Bean, a comical story about some pirates, some sailors and an ordinary family. Everyone had a role to play in the production with the year 7's & 8's having the main roles. Everybody enjoyed it and cooperated well. We had a full house on Wednesday and Thursday nights, which everyone was excited about and tried their best. From the reports of parents, the show was a great success.

Lions Speech Competition

On Sunday the third of November, Lee and I (Adriana) went to the Community Centre in Hawera to compete in the Lions Speech competition. It was a really enjoyable experience as there were lots of really good speakers from everywhere in Taranaki, coming as far as Whanganui and as close to home as New Plymouth. Firstly, we got split into two rooms and in each room there were twenty people giving their speeches (which were really good). Mine was about 'Procrastination', while Lee's was about 'If Our Pets Were Humans'.

Then both rooms of speakers got put into another room where we had to wait until our name was called, then got told a topic for an impromptu speech. The topic for Room 1 (my room) was 'Homework' and the topic for Room 2 (Lee's room) was 'Holidays'. This was the first impromptu speech I have done and it was really fun. I hope to do another impromptu speech sometime. When it came to prize giving I got fifth, an iPod and everyone got a certificate of participation. Overall the day was really cool and very fun, and I enjoyed it lots.

Pets Day Postponed

On Friday 25th October Mangorei School had their annual Pets Day, but because of the bad weather the students could not bring their lambs or calves for judging. The stalls planned for the afternoon also had to be cancelled because of the weather. Fortunately we were able to have the cancelled events the following Tuesday and everyone was able to enjoy one of Mangorei's favourite events. Everybody enjoyed looking at the animals and petting them, watching the police dog exhibition and joining in with the games and stalls. It was the first time in Pets Day history that bad weather had caused the day to be split.

Room 8's Letters From The First Immigrants of New Zealand

Last term Room 8 studied New Zealand's 'first ships'. They read a book in class about New Zealand's early immigrants called "No-one Went to Town", by Phyllis Johnston. They wrote letters pretending to be immigrants sailing to New Zealand which told about life onboard the ship and what they thought New Zealand would be like. These are some examples -

School Cross Country

On Monday 2nd September Mangorei School had their School Cross Country. Once again we were lucky enough to have permission to use Mrs Burr's farm, which gives the event a real country feel and the runners some real challenges. The whole school participated and every student tried their best. The track was hard and it was a challenge to every student. The result was excellent. Mangahamoe got the most points for cheering but all of the houses were good at supporting other house members. We sat in our house groups and got points for cheering for our team mates. The senior leadership was amazing and the juniors behaved brilliantly.  Everyone enjoyed the day.

Here are some pictures of the students racing and the house groups!

2013 year 7&8 Interschool Sports

During term 3 the year 7&8 students participated in interschool sports. The sports played were netball, soccer and rugby. The most recent game played was against Oakura. Sadly the netball and soccer lost but the rugby had a great game and won! After they had finished they had a lovely morning tea prepared for them by Ella, Grace, Dania and Tayla. Smiles all round! :)

Junior visit to Pioneer Village

During August the junior school pupils went for a visit to Pioneer Village as they had been studying about what life was like in the 1800's. While they were there they got to dress up in clothes that look like clothes from the olden days. They even got to work in a classroom using slates. It looks like the juniors had lots of fun!

Planting Outside Room 4

In August the Enviro group was busy once again. They designed and planted a garden in the planting boxes in the Room 4 courtyard. They included a variety of plants such as strawberries, pizza thyme, italian parsley, afro parsley and pansies. The enviro group are so fortunate to be helped out by grandparents with expert knowledge. Thanks to Mr Goodey and Mr and Mrs Cooper for their help with this project. These are a couple of photos from the planting in the courtyard.

Gardening Competition

Mrs Small is one of our Room 3 teachers and also our school enviro specialist. She is looking for students to take part in the 2013 gardening competition. In this competition students have to plant a homemade garden in their backyard, and take responsibility for caring for the plants in their garden. There was a very pleasing result from last years participants and we can't wait to see what students do this year. Here are some pictures from last year to give you some ideas and to get you motivated!

Strike Percussion.

On Tuesday 9th July, Mangorei School was very lucky to have three men from the Strike Percussion  come and perform some amazing acts with all kinds of interesting and fun instruments.  We even had some kids get up and play a Cook Islands drum.  As well as that two teachers, Mrs Orrell and Ms Wastney (who is sadly leaving today) got up and had to play some drums.  It was really cool watching them. At the end they played the Cup Song with full Fresh Up cans and then they used methylated spirits to do a fire act. The performance was really cool and we really enjoyed it.

Book Fair

From 11am-3pm on Sunday the 16th of June, Mangorei School held a book fair. This book fair went very well, with lots of people attending. All the school councillors did their jobs very well. The PTA played a very big part in this too. There was a big variety of books and lots and lots of them got sold and it was fun. The spare books will either go to Mrs Sims for Pets Day or to a massive book stall at the TSB Stadium or the Hospice. The school made lots of money overall!

Science Club

Recently Mr Carr has started a Science club and already there has been a project for them to complete. The students in this club have been busy at home creating 3D models of things to do with oil and gas. Some made oil rigs, some made gas stations and there was even a nodding donkey. The children had two weeks to complete their project. All the kids had so much fun making these at home. This went very well and Mr Carr is very happy with the outcome. These are some photos of the projects.
